Like astrology, the roots of the Tarot dig deep into the ancient past. However, there are many theories about the beginning of the Tarot and its use in Ancient Egypt. For example, its history as a widely used set of cards begins in the 15th Century Milan, Italy. The artist, Bonifacio Bembo, designed a game called Tarocchi for the Visconti family of Milan, and these cards were used later as a gambling game and for divination.

As a result, the Tarocchi consisted of four suits, each with 14 pip cards and 22 cards called the trionfi, or trump, which depicted scenes that were said to represent the court. Although the trionfi were viewed on a superficial level as medieval social types, qualities or virtues, these 22 cards were imbued with esoteric significance and were considered to have links with a series of archetypes and with the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet.
